Duty Free is not always cheap — but you can save big by shopping smart!
Duty Free stores are great for spending time before your flight. Officially, there is no VAT, excise duty, or local taxes — so many people think that prices are always cheaper.
But in reality, only 15–20% of products are cheaper than in city stores.
How to really save money in Duty Free?
✔ Compare prices — with marketplaces and official store websites
✔ Order online in advance:
Advantages:
✔ 10–20% discount upon registration
✔ Exclusive online promotions (sometimes up to –50%)
✔ It is possible to place an order in advance and pick it up at the airport
As a result, the total savings can be from 20–60%.
From my personal experience:
In China, appliances were cheaper in Duty Free than in the city, and in the UAE, watches and jewelry were more affordable. The same brand sells for a significant difference in different countries — for example, a perfume can cost $90 in France, $130 in the UAE, and $150 in Thailand.
So the main rule: compare, plan ahead, and don’t buy on impulse!
